Why Talk Story?
“In Hawaii, we don’t sit and have a conversation,
we
“ talk story.” “Talking story” is way
of connecting
deeply with another person, of sharing, and of
having a really good time.” Stories capture the essence
of any culture and that through story, we can find bridges to
understanding, compassion for ourselves and others,
and appreciation
for our differences.
Through stories and tales we see ourselves and learn to reclaim
those parts of ourselves, which we have lost or forgotten. Through
stories we can remember who we truly are. We can revitalize our
imagination, passion, and our sense of awe and wonder. It is
our creativity and passion that gives color, texture, and meaning
to our lives. Stories are one way for all of us to retain and/or
regain our passion for life.
We are constantly bombarded with stimulation and instant gratification
through TV, video games, computers, and the latest electronic
devices. We have very little time for human connection. It is
my belief that if you can be fully present with another human
being for five minutes a day, you are fortunate. When performing,
I try to connect and be fully present with the audience—to
be in the here and now. At times, audience members, especially
young people, seem to hunger for the connection and stories,
as if they can never get enough. I believe that there is a need
for true human connection and story in our society.
